This book is a space-opera: "science fiction that emphasizes romantic, often melodramatic adventure, set mainly or entirely in space."
Reading this book when I was 10, 11, 12 or so, affected many decisions I'd make well into my early twenties. This happened without me knowing. I had to figure that out much later in life.
Fairy tales matter.

It's great that you can pinpoint an influence in your life. My book, called "The Mouse Book" influenced mine (it was a picture book ... with a few words). I think about how different my life would have been had I read your book.
